Histogram in LR vs Photoshop

I know that if you stretch or pull an 8-bit image too much in Photoshop, it will show sever banding (fence posting). I don't see this same behavior when watching the histograms in LR. Does it just always display a smooth histogram or is there something else going on that actually preserves more tonal information?

Lightroom is working in a linear gamma, 16 bit file (even if your original is 8 bit) so, the odds are real good that nothing you do in Lightroom will ever cause ''combing'' in LR's histogram. That's not to say you can't do evil to your image in Lightroom-you can-just that the odds of actually causing banding and posterization are minimal.

Thanks, that's powerful. ps, I really enjoyed your LL tutorial.
