how to replace german by english

After evaluating the German LR version I decided I would prefer the English version. Now I have difficulties bringing up the english version.

I uninstalled the German LR trial and removed the Lightroom tree from the registry.

But even though I choose ''English US'' and the installer presents an english installation dialog the software starts with the german localisation.

Any hint would be appreciated.

I don't understand what do you mean by ''starts with the german localization''... anyway, you wish LR all in english, right?

I didn't do any in-deep tests, but it seems simple to me. If you install german version, then go to Lightroom's folder (you are on windows?):

..Adobe Photoshop Lightroom\Resources\de

and simply remove/rename ''TranslatedStrings.txt'' file there -if none such file exists, LR will show english by default.

Some copies of LR maybe the German localization only, so this won't work.

Downnload the English trial version from Adobe so you have the English package and Bogdan's suggestion may work.

Don,

it will work, if he renames the TranslatedStrings.txt. I did so it with my copy because I didn't like some of the german translations and didn't find anything after working with the english beta 4 for several month.

This localization looks a little bit like ''Localization Beta 1'' to me and it might be, that it will change to a language dll in future versions.

The default language (english) is in the program itself and is used, if no translatedstrings.txt is found in the local subfolder or if you have an english version of xp.

No, the trial versions currently offered for download at adobe.com or adobe.de are the same (except Japanese). It doesn't matter if you choose english, german or french for Windows. After unpacking you will obtain the same file (Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.exe - 39.663 KB for Windows).

Even the boxed version I purchased contains the same file. The only difference of the CD version is an additional sample image and an additional adobe reader on the CD.

At the beginning of the installation the installer asks which language should be installed.

Apparently this choice is only taken for the license agreement and further installation dialogue.

Apparently this choice of language does not influence the LR software installation!!! Always all languages are installed. But as Juergen said the Windows operating system language version (englisch, german, ...) influences the LR default language. This locale is stored in the registry field: ...SOFTWARE/Adobe/Lightroom/1.0/Locale=de_de in case of a german Windows XP. Changing this currently has no effect.

This behaviour is really confusing and misleading. I continiously feel like a beta tester.

Fortunately your hint to hide the Resources/de/TranslatedStrings.txt file brought up the english GUI for me.

Thank you very much for the fast help!

Martin

If what you say in paragraph4 and 5 is correct then that doesn't marry up with my experience. I am running Windows XP SP2 but the OS is German. However, when I downloaded and installed LR it is running in English - which of course is what I want. I haven't changed anything and if memory serves me correctly all I did was choose English which you now say only applies to the license agreement. Um - not complaining though, I want it in Englisch. :-)

When did you download your copy? The very first download versions were english only. A week or two after the release Adobe offered the multilanguage version (english, german, french).

My multilanguage version is Build 310575, the first download had another build number.

Perhaps that explains it then J眉rgen. Can't remember off hand when I downloaded it now but it was immediately following receipt of the email that allowed us RSP users a free download. The email was received on the day expected and as promised. My build is 308266.

Well download the current build 310575 and then take it from there.

Don't quite follow you - was that last post for my benefit? I am quite happy the way LR is running now (bugs and minor irritations exempted of course) and being English I want my version to run in English. I only happen to be running a German OS because I'm living in Germany.

I think you may have misread my earlier post - I was just pointing out that although my OS is German I am able to run LR in English. The received advice was that earlier versions of LR were only offered in English to which I acknowledged that this must have been the reason why.

My version is 308266 - the latest version offering alternative languages is 310575 so I gather. Unless advised differently I can't see any benefit for me personally of downloading and installing version 310575 which as far as I can tell doesn't offer anything more other than language installation options - yes?

I installed the current build 310575 and observed the described language problems. The older english only build had no problems running with english GUI on a german windows os of course, but this is no longer available for download.

Alan, I do not expect that someone will answer the question if there are further differences between the two builds. It is common practise to include some minor bugfixes into new software releases without mentioning it in the release notes (why should the supplier blame itself?). I do not know if this has been done here, but it could be IMHO.

Thanks martin but there is also the age old saying ''if it aint broke then don't try to fix it''. Apart from some minor irritations that have been well documented on the forum and which we are assured have been noted and will be fixed, I am not having any problems with LR as such and won't tempt fate by installing another version without good solid reason :-)

Hi, I have the same problem today but with the French MS version of the OS ''XP Pro SP''. I desire to install Light room V1.1 in English, can some tell me how to get that and not the French version of Light Room?

Thanks

Pierre
