is lightroom worth it?

I was ready to buy when I started reading this user to user forum. what I would like to know is, even with all these complaints, do you think that Lightroom is worth owning?

If it is, would you you get the box or download?
is lightroom worth it?
Yes.

Download.
is lightroom worth it?
If you've done the trial and like the features and type of 'workflow' then yes ... boxed.

Why Boxed, when the dowload is the same, minus a booklet and one can burn a copy for back-up? Download is quicker and should be cheaper (in the Americas).

I ended up purchasing the boxed version today despite all of my complaints on these forums. I still like the concept of Lightroom and want to be there when the update rolls out. If you are ready to buy, then go ahead and buy.

I got the boxed version only because of the printed Getting Started guide. I flipped through it and immediately put it on the shelf, granted, but I wanted to have it nevertheless.

Really, though, the download is probably the better way to go. Instant gratification, and all...

It is very worth it. Get it before the price goes up.

''I was ready to buy when I started reading this user to user forum. what I would like to know is, even with all these complaints,''

Just to be clear, there are many thousands of users out there who are _NOT_ posting to these forums and who are rather happily using Lightroom on a daily basis.

The very fact that some people seak out a public forum to 1) ask for help or 2) voice their complaints can not be used as any real yardstick for the application...it's a yardstick that people 1) need help or 2) want to complain and find that a public forum suits them...

By the way, the getting started guide is available as a .pdf.

George,

I would ask what you want to use it for before saying just go buy it.

I'm one of the ''complainers'' but I'm very happy with it. I'm assuming it will be improved, I hope with a free update since there are a number of true bugs, and I'm sure later on with upgrades I will have to pay for.

My primary reason for getting it was to help me manage thousands of images and I'm very happy with it for that. The other day I was able to locate the picture I wanted in seconds that it would have taken me hours to find without a catalog. If you think it will work as your only image editing tool, you would probably be wrong.

Judy

There are always kinks to iron out during a product roll out, but so far LR has saved me enough time to pay for itself many times over.

If you wait for it to be perfected:

1. it will cost you more to own

2. you'll be behind the curve with:

a. learning how to use this product and develop an efficient workflow

b. managing your digital photos and PSD files.

3. You'll have a slightly more perfected product.

You need to weigh for yourself the pros and cons against your needs. I have issues with what it calls a photo but that wouldn't interfere with me recommending it highly to those with large photo libraries -- i.e. almost anyone with a DSLR.

By the way, the getting started guide is available as a .pdf.

True, but I couldn't get it to print right. Eh... not a great reason to get the boxed version, sure, but ah well...

How do I burn a backup copy?

Can I use the bkup to install on my other computer?

Andy

Just download the install from the website, and use that. It's the full version and you can install it on as many computers as you want. Your license allows you to enter your serial number on two (maybe more???) computers.

Just two, not used simultaneously. Can be cross platform.

You can burn the download disk image to a CD for back-up. But since one can always redownload, why?

I, too, highly recommend Lightroom. ;)

After perusing this forum for months, it seems that most of the complainers (not all) are non-Macintosh users. I use a Mac, and have found only one very minor bug in LR v1.0. (one of the menuBar names will remain highlighted after I've utilized it. nothing else)

I suspect the LR team will bring the PC version up to speed, eventually. If you're a PC user, you'll have to be more patient at this time.

BTW, I downloaded LR.

jeff

It's not perfect by any means, but for me it's the most useful program on my computer. Highly recommended.

I think the shear volume of responses regarding the flawed idiosyncracies of this program is testament to the fact that most feel it is worth it despite this, and thus feel the need to ensure its improvement beyond V1.0.

Many a frustrated user (including me) still persisting because we can see the amazing potential. I have tried to return to my previous RAW converter (RSP), and as good as it was, its an infant compared to LR.

Adobe has a vision on how users should use this program, which i see as the reason for most peoples complaints. People are afraid of change, and as such are still coming to terms with the style that adobe wishes us to adhere to. There is room for flexability,, i'm sure will be introduced into future releases.

Get it now while its cheap!

Bring on 1.1 and watch this forum fill with praise.

thanks for the input. I'm now the proud owner of lightroom

Good stuff George and look at the positive comments you stimulated, thank you for asking your question!!

Enjoy LR!!!!!

Congrats, and take it from me who's been on a rollercoaster of an emotional ride with Lightroom, don't get too frustrated just yet. Give it time.

Now if I could only listen to my own advice...

If you've tried the trial version (please do) and like what it has to offer then, by all means it's worth it.

I'd give it a qualified yes. On the whole, I like it quite a bit, but there is still plenty of frustration with it for me. I am NOT happy with the print module. When the price goes up at the end of the month, I don't think I would recommend it, however I would recommend it at the introductory price.

I just downloaded the free trial. I understand the price goes up on May 1. But if you have downloaded it do you get the price break after May 1st? That is, is the price break grandfathered if trial downloaded before May 1?

Scott

''That is, is the price break grandfathered if trial downloaded before May 1?

''

No, Adobe would have no way of tracking that...the price change is May 1st, regardless of when you downloaded it...it's when you bought it that determines the price.

No, Lightroom is currently a waste of money.

This is due to constant ''out of memory'' crashes.

Lightroom would be a good product if this fatal flaw did not exist.

Did you try what I asked you toy try Paul? Or are you just intent on spreading FUD.

Definately worth it.I support the view that the download should be cheaper.

It's just great for my RAW workflow.I shoot RAW all the time now. It's new and different to anything I've used before so I suppose there has been a steep learning curve initially but it's not a difficult app to use.I also acknowledge that some of us have had some difficulties with the program yet many have not.

I found my old PC struggled speed wise but I threw another stick of memory at it and it works smoothly now.

Colin

Yes, Lightroom is worth it. Buy it!

Here's an interesting post in O'Reilly Digital Media Blogs about a pro photographer who thought enough of Lightroom to switch from Aperture:
