Does light room allow use of shared folder on a home network for storage of jpgs ? I don't know if it's not allowed or if I am doing something wrong, it won't let me use the folder with all my other photos.

Better to use an attached USB or Firewire drive and put the Lightroom folder there to share, as well.

You can store the image files on a network, but the LR ''library'', by which I mean the metadata files and other files found in the LR folder, must be on an attached or internal drive, not on a network.



I use attached drives, so I can't comment on how slow (or not slow) processing images on a network volume would be.
