ACR 4 Released, Lightroom next?

Ok,

ACR 4 has been released: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106%26amp;platform=Windows

Maybe we can expect an update of Lightroom soon?

ACR 4 Released, Lightroom next?
The CS3 version of Camera Raw that comes with Photoshop _IS_ what's in Lightroom 1.0 (pretty much). Note they both have the exact same tools and capability (well, CR doesn't that the TAT).

As Jeff indicated, Lightroom 1.0 and Camera Raw 4.0 have identical processing engines. The single exception is that Camera Raw 4.0 includes additional official support for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8. Official support will be included in the next camera support update for Lightroom. (As with previous Adobe camera support updates, no future dates will be announced)

For Lightroom customers that wish to use their Lumix DMC-FZ8 raw files in Lightroom, please download the free DNG Converter 4.0 to convert your raw files to the DNG format, then import into Lightroom. Apologies for the temporary inconvenience.

wait.... I'm confused...

I was under the (mis?)impression that there were big improvements coming in adobe's raw processing. I downloaded acr4 and converted some nef files to dng. I saw just what Jeff and Tom say above. ACR4 does the same job as LR1. I had been hoping to see that ACR4 had closed some of the gap with NC in the area of noise. And because there's been all this discussion (often from insiders) about how we should ''keep watching'' for improvements to Adobe's raw conversion, I really thought that this was what we were supposed to be waiting for. So, am I confused? Is there some other improvement also coming up, or was the big news people have been hinting about that DMC-FZ8 was being added to the list of supported cameras?

thanks for any information.

Well, the statement that changes are coming does not imply that they are here yet... :-)

ACR 4 (as a beta) has been around longer than the awaited changes, so they are 'still' coming.

Phew, I was all excited to see reduced noise, so was frustrated when it wasn't there. Thanks for clearing that up.

Though it has some startup pains, LR is basically a wonderful program.

And so I remain...

-Anxious (to dump Nikon Software) in NY.

Just understand that it's been ''interesting times'' at Adobe for the last year or so...

First was the public preview of Lightroom and then Photoshop CS3 in Dec. In Feb, Lightroom 1.0 shipped and now Photoshop CS3 has shipped. Lightroom, Camera Raw/DNG, Bridge and Photoshop all being rev'ed and being released essentially within a single quarter has been-uh, shall we say ''INTERESTING''...

All of the engineers have been workin' full tilt boogie really since well before last year. It's only now that all this hard work is finally getting shipped. And poor Tom Hogarty! He's product manager for both Camera Raw, DNG _AND_ Lightroom so he has his fingers in pretty much everything.

And...on top of EVERYTHING ELSE, Adobe has managed to release new versions of the former Macromedia products as well as launching completely new applications not to mention new releases of Premier Pro for Mac (which was a shocker).

Johnny L said that the entire CS3 suite entailed over 80 millions lines of new code-and I don't think he was counting Lightroom.

In the grand scheme of things, what Adobe has already done this year is completely unprecedented in the computer industry...ya just gotta be impressed with all the work and the resulting products they have given us.

And, no...they ain't done yet...stay tuned.

Thanks for the insights to Adobe, Jeff. I for one really appreciate them.

Can the update be plugged in Lightroom in some way?

What update and why? If ACR 4.0, it is in effect, already there, same pipeline. Did you read this whole thread?

Thanks Thom,

I downloaded the converter and tried some FZ8 files. They came up perfectly in Lightroom. Thanks for being speedy with camera support for my FZ8.
