Rearranging photos in library

I can drag photos around in grid view when working on PC but photos don't move when working in Mac OS X. Anyone else having that problem?

Seeems to work ok for me on OSX 10.4.9 in collections or folders.

There is a simple logic behind where and when you can drag photos around:

Whether you can drag photos around depends on the sort order which you can set in the toolbar (press T if you can't see the toolbar).

# **************** Only if the sort order is in 'user order' mode you can rearrange the images!

# ****************

However there is an interesting and I think intended effect. If you are browsing a FOLDER you have to manually set the order to 'user order' if you want to rearrange the files. In a COLLECTION, the order mode is changing automatically to 'user order' if you try to drag a picture.

Only Exception: You cannot get the user order option if you are in Library/All Photographs.

It is that simple but unfortunately nowhere documented.

Christoph, works for me that ''user order'' is automatically selected in both folders or collections.............

b Myth Busting Here!

It is not a matter of setting ''user order'' to do this. It is a matter of being in the correct place. Lower level Collection or Folder or Quick Collection and definitely not All Photographs. Then just start Drag %26amp; Drop from Center of Image Thimbnail in Grid or Fimlstrip (not frame/cell) and when you get a hard Black line between thumbnails(White Bar in Filmstrip) to say where LR is currently looking for you to place the image ,then you are good to go.

''User order'' will be set in Sort anytime you are allowed to do this. It just indicates that you have doen a ''user order''. You don't have to first set it yourself.

Hi Don,

I stand corrected. I just verified that 'user order' is also switched automatically in Folders view on my system as well.

But - no kidding - when I tried this some weeks ago with LR 1.0 I had the problem in Folder view that LR did not switch automatically and I was not able to drag photos around until I switched manually to 'user order'.

To keep my reputation here I think I have to reserve some time this evening to get the same conditions to prove this.

I have definitely no interest to be called a myth buster!

If you had to do it that way, I would say that is a work around fix, not how it should work. Kinda like doing restart for a glitch till Adobe fixes it.

Thanks for all the replies. The problem was that I was in the main folder- user order wasn't even available in the Sort pull down menu when I was in the top folder. However, now I have another problem. I'm able to re-arrrange RAW photos into any order but the Tiffs seem to have minds of their own- sometimes they move and sometimes they don't. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again.
