Importing XMP sidecars

I have some raw files that have associated XMP sidecar files created in Bridge. When I try to import them into LR the XMP files are greyed out. How do I get them both into LR? All I can think of is to convert them to DNG in the Bridge.

When you import the images, the XMPs should be read along with them. You only import images, not sidecars.

You might feel safer if you copied (via LR Import dialogue) the existing images into a new place during the LR import. Then you'd see for sure that the .xmp files were there (or, conceivably, not)
