Problem with files after Importing

Pardon me if this has been covered, but I've searched the forum and Knowledge Base without finding anything.

I placed six TIFF files in a folder and imported them into LR, for the purpose of creating a Web Gallery to show to a client. (These were TIFFs created in PS CS2.) After importing, I created the Web Gallery and exported it to a new folder, no problem.

I then tried to open one of the original TIFFs in PS CS2 and got this message: ''Could not complete your request because of a program error.''

If I go back to LR and export the files (overwriting the files in the original folder)
via the Library, the original TIFFs regain their integrity and can be opened in PS CS2. Is this normal behavior? I don't see why I should have to overwrite my original files to get them to work again.

(OS is WIN XP, SP2, Dual-core Athlon, 4GB RAM)
Problem with files after Importing
I have found that I'm not seeing this behavior if I import a folder of JPEGs. It is quite repeatable (on my machine) when importing TIFF images.

%26lt;br /%26gt;Does seem odd, the Tiff thing. If you select the Tiff in LR and then go to Edit in PS, will it?

John, yes, I can edit in PS from LR.

To anyone that's followed this issue, I'm pretty sure I've found the culprit: I ran a test with my anti-virus program turned off, and the problem went away.

I've been using Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2006. It's never caused a problem before with PS CS2 (or any of the previous versions of PS), and I have no clue why it would get involved in Lightroom's import process, but they're somehow butting heads.

Could some of you folks tell me what anti-virus programs you're using with LR installed, that haven't caused this problem?

Thanks,

Nick

The program I use is called Macintosh. I've had no antivirus program installed for over five years, and nary a problem. That's with a minimum of common sense, about all I can muster today....:).

No problem, John. I kinda figured I'd get a few like that.

I was also thinking there might be a few Windows Lightroom users around. Ah, well.

b Needed: Recommendation for Windows anti-virus program!!

J.

AVG.

NOD32 from http://www.eset.com. Very low profile, not bloated, and doesn't interfere with legitimate stuff. Updates automatically several times a day.

Thanks!

Kaspersky Internet Security 6. Tried a few over the years and this has got to be one of the best. Interferes with nothing, updates auto several times a day, gets good reviews, reasonable cost and and and...

No, I'm not getting any backhanders :-)

Thanks, Alan.

I cataloged all my external drives with Lightroom. I also did the G5 interal drive and a Mac Book Pro. Now I have dozens and dozens if not hundreds of tif files that give the error ''cannot open because of end of file'' I know they are not damaged because i can open them in Image Ready, resave as a .psd, then they open in CS2 or beta CS3. If this had been on one drive I would not blame LightRoom but when I indexed the lap top and then those tiffs got damaged I have to assume Lightroom has done some thing to the files.

Any help on how to undo the damage will be appreciated. Bonny

Bonny, I saw a discussion about this on the Photoshop CS3 Beta boards at labs.adobe.com. Apparently, if a tiff had been cataloged with LR and then edited with new Bridge (which I really didn't understand because you don't ''edit'' with Bridge) the tiff becomes unusable. Yes, you can open the files with ImageReady or with iView Media Pro but you lose the layers.

I don't think there is a work around.

I've lost a number of tiffs, too.

I'm on Mac OS X.

Since i never used Bridge that does not explain what the final Lightroom did to the tifs when they were cataloged. Some one else has suggested that lightroom might have made a sidecar file that make the file unreadable. I am going to repair some of files with ImageReady and put them on to a brand new drive and index them again. If it happens to the new files again them it will comfirm my thought that Lightroom is doing it.

I also have the same problem as Bonny.

Frankly I think that the Mac / PC thing and the Anti-virus issues are red herrings.

I have numerous files which existed on my hard drives for years. After importing them into LR they became un-openable in PS (CS2 and CS3) or any other tif-reading software (i.e. Windows thumbnail view on explorer or Picture viewer). However, once I export the files from LR, the files become useable once again (as long as I don't re-import them back into LR).

Error messages include ''unexpected end of file...'' and ''could not complete your request because of a file error''

I have PC's at home and at work and I can replicate the problem at both locations.

So to sum up - I start with a good tif file which shows a thumbnail in Windows explorer (and opens in PS). I import the file into LR and immediately when I go back to the Windows Explorer I see that the thumbnail has turned into a generic icon (meaning that the file is unreadable and can no longer be opened in CS3). Then, if I export the file from LR (but don't re-import it) it becomes useable again.

Note that at all times the ''corrupt'' files behave normally while in LR.

This is a problem with both TIFS and PSD file but not JPGS. Also, all layers, if there were any, are lost during the export.

Finally, I should say that this problem is somewhat random. It seems to affect most of our older scanned files, some portion of our Nikon D70 files and fewer (if any) of our Canon 5D files. The scans were produced by various service bureaus over the years and I have been working with them with various versions of PS with no problems - until now when they've been handled by LR.

I also originally thought that this was maybe a Bridge issue that was affecting the Beta. However, I think that I can safely say that this is strictly an LR thing since I stayed away from Bridge while testing this problem over the last few days.

Help....please?

I've got a lot of work to do to re-cover (re-export) these files + I want to continue using LR which I think is excellent otherwise.

Andrew

I'm using ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.0.337 with no problems.

A friend of mine had exactly the same problem today ( on Mac G5 ) ,

with most of his files getting '' unexpected end of file '' error .

His face became all shades of grey .

Thanks to your '' export '' workaround it was a happy ending

, but he will not be using Lightroom anymore ...

The experience was just too scary ( he was a short while from reformatting his drive .. )

It seems that there is just too much of coincidence ...

( Also regular TIff files became corrupted )

I agree -- this is a real issue. I wonder how many people have tiffs they can't open but just haven't noticed yet?

Yes, you can export the images, but you lose all your layers.
