importing images/PC

I'm sorry, I'm just not getting the logic behind importing images into LR.I Do I first copy the images to my hard drive and then import to Lightroom? Do the images actually reside in LR or in a location that can always be accessed by Lightroom. When I try to bring images in from a cd I keep getting a message that the folder is empty. I can open them in Adobe Bridge, so I know they're there. I'm a right-brain painter not a photographer but I'm hoping that Lightroom will help me organize a growing and important body of reference material. I don't want to stop using this program before I even get started.

That's what I do, though you can do it through LR.

They end up wherever you want them to end up on your hard disk.

What type of images? LR doesn't handle nearly the number of image types that bridge does.
