Export JPEG file sizes

I've noticed that Lightroom seems to produce unduly large JPEG files on export. It's not the metadata as I have compared with and without that, so it must be the way LR is constructing the file. Comparing the files against Photoshop and other programs such as Breezebroswer, I am seeing roughly 3 times larger files from LR for an 800x600 image: approximately 100KB for the other programs and 300KB for LR. I have tried changing the quality, but the files are still very large even when down at 60 or 65%.

Does anyone have any clues how to reduce exported JPEG file sizes? Or perhaps the team can add this to something to optimise for th enext release?

Thanks,

Simon

Simon, I am not certain but have heard that Lightroom and Photoshop use a

different scale for the JPG compression. Meaning what would seem like the

same level of compression in Lightroom as Photoshop may actually be less

compression in LR. So you maybe saving a higher quality of JPG as compared

to Photoshop.

I would try matching file sizes. Take one image and save it in Photoshop at

the level you want and then fiddle with LR until you get an exported JPG of

about the same size. Logically they should then have about the same level of

compression.

I've noticed the same thing however saving at the highest in LR

produces a much bigger file than saving

at the highest in PS so that scale is not an issue

This is something that should not need to be resolved.

Noticed the same thing here.

I tried this:

1. Export from LR with as low quality setting as possible until artifacts started to show up.

2. Export from LR as TIF, use PS ''Save as...'' to save as JPG with the same visible quality.

After that the pictures were of the same visible quality (same level of artifacts showing). The pics from LR were more than 2 times the size compared to pics save from PS.

This is troublesome when creating web galleries. It is very easy to do so from LR but the resulting images are too large (in KB).

One possible workaround would be to export the web gallery at maximum quality from LR and then use a PS to to resave them (batch conversion)?
