In Lightroom, there are 24 images that appear upside-down in the filmstrip as well as the thumbnails. These 24 images are right in the middle of an airshow photo shoot. Images before and after appear right-side-up.
This problem does not exist in Photoshop Elements 4 (or any other image viewer).
Images appear upside down
If this behavior occurred after you finished importing and before you did anything else. I'd remove the images from LR and then reimport them to see if the behavior repeats itself. If it does LR might be misreading the camera info. Send a bug report to the LR people.
In the meantime go to Grid view highlight the miscreant images and flip them.
Images appear upside down
What sort of camera? Does it have a sensor inside that allows it to know the orientation of the image? If so, perhaps the roll, pitch or yaw of the camera (pun intended!) was such that this sensor was confused. Of course, if all you were doing was taking pictures of aircraft at rest, with the camera in the normal attitude then this does not necessarily apply.
At any rate, you can check the EXIF data on the images to see what the orientation of the image is /supposed/ to be. If you have the originals, does it look upside down on when viewing in the camera?
Thanks Tim,
It seems your suggestion to bring all the inverted images into the
Grid view and flip them seems to be the simplest and most direct. I tried removing all images from the Library and importing them again--didn't work.
thanks again,
Dick
Camera may have auto rotate function set which gets confused or confuses LR.......
I forgot to ask. Was the airplane upside down when you were shooting at the airshow?
By the way. Was this the airshow where the Blue Angels pilot went down?
It's a reminder that precision flying is not for the faint of heart.

V 1.0 Installed but doesn't work...
I successfully installed v 1.0 after uninstalling the beta. I didn't use the beta much so I had no libraries to import.
I imported a folder as a test. The images imported fine. I could go to Slideshow and Library. But when I tried to go to Develop or Print the program would hang with the processor locked at 100%.
This happened several times.
I then rebooted hoping that would help. Unfortunately it's worse. Now I can still only go to Slideshow or Library. BUT, it also closes itself after about 45 seconds of being open.
Also, after coming back from the reboot the shortcut icon on the desktop was missing (don't know if that's connected to the problem).
I'm running XP with 1 Gig of RAM. I also have PSCS2 and PSE3--(my old cataloging software!)
I reviewed any FAQs I could find and didn't see reference to this problem.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.
V 1.0 Installed but doesn't work...
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the v 1.0 version?

V 1.0 Installed but doesn't work...
I have a few times, it still does it. I've just finished rebooting from a registry cleaning. I'm going to do some searching for any references to Lightroom and then try another reinstall.
I was sure that you had, but since I didn't see it in your post, I thought I'd ask.
I don't know if this will apply to your situation, but you may want to check out the
Windows Install Cleanup Utility and see if there is anything that is stuck.
Good luck!
Brian
I'll check that utility. I've gotten it so that it doesn't suddenly close itself. However, the Develop module locks up. I can use Libary and Slideshow with no problems -- even the quick develop tools in Library. But the develop module and print module refuse to work. (I haven't tried web yet.)
Thanks for the reference for the utility (if it doesn't help here I'm sure it will help in the future!)
Matt
Fixed it! Lightroom is NOT compatible with NVidia NView desktop manager.
I don't even know what the desktop manager does! (It came preinstalled on my PC...It didn't have any problem with the betas of Lightroom!) But I had a message from the manager stating that it detected a problem. I turned off the NView desktop and everything works fine now.
Well, except my active desktop that got messed up early in this process. I can live with that problem though...
Good job, detective!

is lightroom worth it?
I was ready to buy when I started reading this user to user forum. what I would like to know is, even with all these complaints, do you think that Lightroom is worth owning?
If it is, would you you get the box or download?
is lightroom worth it?
Yes.
Download.
is lightroom worth it?
If you've done the trial and like the features and type of 'workflow' then yes ... boxed.
Why Boxed, when the dowload is the same, minus a booklet and one can burn a copy for back-up? Download is quicker and should be cheaper (in the Americas).

I ended up purchasing the boxed version today despite all of my complaints on these forums. I still like the concept of Lightroom and want to be there when the update rolls out. If you are ready to buy, then go ahead and buy.
I got the boxed version only because of the printed Getting Started guide. I flipped through it and immediately put it on the shelf, granted, but I wanted to have it nevertheless.
Really, though, the download is probably the better way to go. Instant gratification, and all...
It is very worth it. Get it before the price goes up.
''I was ready to buy when I started reading this user to user forum. what I would like to know is, even with all these complaints,''
Just to be clear, there are many thousands of users out there who are _NOT_ posting to these forums and who are rather happily using Lightroom on a daily basis.
The very fact that some people seak out a public forum to 1) ask for help or 2) voice their complaints can not be used as any real yardstick for the application...it's a yardstick that people 1) need help or 2) want to complain and find that a public forum suits them...
By the way, the getting started guide is available as a .pdf.

George,
I would ask what you want to use it for before saying just go buy it.
I'm one of the ''complainers'' but I'm very happy with it. I'm assuming it will be improved, I hope with a free update since there are a number of true bugs, and I'm sure later on with upgrades I will have to pay for.
My primary reason for getting it was to help me manage thousands of images and I'm very happy with it for that. The other day I was able to locate the picture I wanted in seconds that it would have taken me hours to find without a catalog. If you think it will work as your only image editing tool, you would probably be wrong.
Judy
There are always kinks to iron out during a product roll out, but so far LR has saved me enough time to pay for itself many times over.
If you wait for it to be perfected:
1. it will cost you more to own
2. you'll be behind the curve with:
a. learning how to use this product and develop an efficient workflow
b. managing your digital photos and PSD files.
3. You'll have a slightly more perfected product.
You need to weigh for yourself the pros and cons against your needs. I have issues with what it calls a photo but that wouldn't interfere with me recommending it highly to those with large photo libraries -- i.e. almost anyone with a DSLR.
True, but I couldn't get it to print right. Eh... not a great reason to get the boxed version, sure, but ah well...
How do I burn a backup copy?
Can I use the bkup to install on my other computer?
Andy
Just download the install from the website, and use that. It's the full version and you can install it on as many computers as you want. Your license allows you to enter your serial number on two (maybe more???) computers.
Just two, not used simultaneously. Can be cross platform.
You can burn the download disk image to a CD for back-up. But since one can always redownload, why?

I, too, highly recommend Lightroom. ;)
After perusing this forum for months, it seems that most of the complainers (not all) are non-Macintosh users. I use a Mac, and have found only one very minor bug in LR v1.0. (one of the menuBar names will remain highlighted after I've utilized it. nothing else)
I suspect the LR team will bring the PC version up to speed, eventually. If you're a PC user, you'll have to be more patient at this time.
BTW, I downloaded LR.
jeff
It's not perfect by any means, but for me it's the most useful program on my computer. Highly recommended.
I think the shear volume of responses regarding the flawed idiosyncracies of this program is testament to the fact that most feel it is worth it despite this, and thus feel the need to ensure its improvement beyond V1.0.
Many a frustrated user (including me) still persisting because we can see the amazing potential. I have tried to return to my previous RAW converter (RSP), and as good as it was, its an infant compared to LR.
Adobe has a vision on how users should use this program, which i see as the reason for most peoples complaints. People are afraid of change, and as such are still coming to terms with the style that adobe wishes us to adhere to. There is room for flexability,, i'm sure will be introduced into future releases.
Get it now while its cheap!
Bring on 1.1 and watch this forum fill with praise.
thanks for the input. I'm now the proud owner of lightroom
Good stuff George and look at the positive comments you stimulated, thank you for asking your question!!
Enjoy LR!!!!!
Congrats, and take it from me who's been on a rollercoaster of an emotional ride with Lightroom, don't get too frustrated just yet. Give it time.
Now if I could only listen to my own advice...
If you've tried the trial version (please do) and like what it has to offer then, by all means it's worth it.
I'd give it a qualified yes. On the whole, I like it quite a bit, but there is still plenty of frustration with it for me. I am NOT happy with the print module. When the price goes up at the end of the month, I don't think I would recommend it, however I would recommend it at the introductory price.
I just downloaded the free trial. I understand the price goes up on May 1. But if you have downloaded it do you get the price break after May 1st? That is, is the price break grandfathered if trial downloaded before May 1?
Scott
''That is, is the price break grandfathered if trial downloaded before May 1?
''
No, Adobe would have no way of tracking that...the price change is May 1st, regardless of when you downloaded it...it's when you bought it that determines the price.
No, Lightroom is currently a waste of money.
This is due to constant ''out of memory'' crashes.
Lightroom would be a good product if this fatal flaw did not exist.
Did you try what I asked you toy try Paul? Or are you just intent on spreading FUD.
Definately worth it.I support the view that the download should be cheaper.
It's just great for my RAW workflow.I shoot RAW all the time now. It's new and different to anything I've used before so I suppose there has been a steep learning curve initially but it's not a difficult app to use.I also acknowledge that some of us have had some difficulties with the program yet many have not.
I found my old PC struggled speed wise but I threw another stick of memory at it and it works smoothly now.

View raw files on card before importing
Is there a way to view and select my files on my CF card in Lightroom before importing? This would save a lot of download time. I can view and select in Breezebrowser, writing down the file names and then selecting which ones to import in Lightroom. It would be much easier to do this all in Lightroom if possible.
View raw files on card before importing
I think you can do this in the Import dialog. There is a selectable option to Preview the files to be loaded, and once this is selected, you can view the files and select those you want to import.

Applying develop presets to multiple...
Is there a way to do this. If I select multiple photos and click on a preset, it only applies it to the first one. Using copy %26amp; paste or Sync is not an option as I see it because one does not know which settings to tick / untick in the copy or sync dialog boxes to get the same results for each photo. Ticking all settings will do more harm than good if I understand it correctly.

Lightroom Photo Count
Hello,
I've just begun importing photos into LR. I'm doing it by folder. I'm not certain how this happened, but at this point LR is telling me that I have 2244 photos in my library. But when I take the option to display all photos, it tells me it is displaying 2240 of 2244 and it shows me 2240.
I've gone back to each folder and checked for missing photos and folders and come up with nothing. I don't recall having an abend during an update...but I'm still a new with this SW, so maybe I missed something. Is there an option to validate my library, or the database, or reconnect missing files... to see if that's my problem?
Any ideas?
Regards,
Claudia

Hello Jeff,

In grid mode of All Photographs do 'Expand All Stacks' from the Menu or Contextual Menu. If the numbers change, you have a stack somewhere. You may not have deliberately mad a stack but the is autostacking of some image cominations and Clt/Cmd-G will stack selected images in the same folder. This could have been done inadvertantly.

Claudia,
Are you referring to the text above the filmstrip where it will say ''All Photographs/2240 of 2244 photos''? If so check your filter settings as you may have flagged photos that are excluded by filtering.
Oops: you posted after I started my reply. I'm glad you figured it out.
Concerning these numbers. For the past few days I have been working at completely reorganising my folder structure so that now I have one master folder with multiple sub folders some of which are divided further still. Then I cleaned out all the dng files from the folders that had both dng and the original raw files. Following this I deleted the current database (after saving a copy for emergencies) which had the result of clearing out all used keywords. I then deleted all unused keywords. The result was a clean start with LR.
I then did an 'Import' and selected only the ''Master'' folder which brought in 'X' number of images. What was strange was that although LR brought in ALL the images (shown as All Photographs) it then showed X minus Y under the 'Last Import' dialogue which in fact was 4 less then the total 'Import' of 'X'.
I physically counted all the images in their respective folders and this tallied with that shown under 'All Photographs' in LR.
I still haven't found a reason why the 'Last Import' figure was showing 4 images less when I have only done one (1) Import. I found that shutting down LR and then restarting it cleared the problem but the fact that this problem showed in the first place illustrates that there must be some sort of problem with LR's counting mechanism. As this was almost a fresh install because a New db was created there were obviously no flags/filters etc set. Um!!
Jeff,
Thanks for your insight, I had a similar thing and by Expanding all stacks it all makes sense.
I've found the folder with the cross and am having some trouble identifying which shots are stacked (after Collapsing all stacks again) so I can remove just this single stack. Is there an easier way than scrolling through masses of shots looking for numbers?

With a raw photo I can simply press ''clrl e'' and the raw photo is converted into a tif or psd file and sent to photoshop. That is very convenient when you have worked on the photo and wish to make additional adjustments in CS3. When I do the same process with a jpg file, it converts the file from jpg into a tif at a much larger file size then necessary. Is there a way to get a jpg file which I have worked on within Lightroom into CS3 without using the export function? Thanks, Arthur

Not without creating a TIFF.

Lee Jay, I think you are wrong this time (only)!
Arthur, to solve your problem you have to do two things:
1. In LR open preferences and activate to automatically write changes to XMP. This ensures that your JPG pictures are updated with the LR settings in the XMP container within the jpg file.
2.in PSCS3 open preferences. In the file handling section you will find the option to 'prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files'. If this option is activated also jpg files are processed with ACR.
You asked for a way to get a jpg file into CS3 without using export. Now you have that. After you made your adjustments in LR just open the jpg in CS3 and you will see the photo with all changes you have made. I tested this with LR and CS3 beta myself it it works perfectly.
That is what I do Christoph and when you open the image in LR again magically all the PS changes show up too...........
I assumed he meant the developed file. But you're right, the xmp data is a way to serve the same purpose.
